- Thanks to all of you who were able to join me for conferences. I always take this time at report cards to see what adjustments I can make to best help the students. - WRITING - Twice a week we do a 5 minute timed writing to practice writing fluency. Working on Literary Essays and organization. We are also practicing using our cursive handwriting in our work. As part of our reading, we are looking at informational text features. This will get us ready for our next writing unit.
- MATH - Watch the Weekly Math Check-in to come home on Friday. I've noted our recommended pace above each day to keep them on track. This week the majority of the class will be taking the Mid Module Test for Module 3. These tests will be included in the portfolios. I know it isn't possible for everyone, but completing a ZEARN lesson at home so they are ready for the next day's lesson is highly recommended. Every day we use a website called www.xtramath.com for daily practice in math fluency skills. This can also be used on the weekend at home. We are also working through our multiplication facts using lessons on itslearning.
- SCIENCE - We are beginning the Unit "Earth and Me" which focuses on Earth's materials, natural resources, and and how humans use natural resources. (Really excited about this one!!!)
- SOCIAL STUDIES - Michigan History
- TECHNOLOGY - Please make sure your child's Ipad comes back to school charged. Continuing to practice typing skills, daily if possible.
- SPECIALS - Music (Monday - Concert in May); 21st Century (Tuesday); HEART (Wednesday); Gym (Thursday); Art (Friday); LIBRARY (FRIDAY). REMEMBER YOUR GYM SHOES ON THURSDAY AND LIBRARY BOOKS ON FRIDAY!
- This Friday we will celebrate our completion of our compliment chain. We've been collecting compliments since the beginning of the year. We haven't had a pizza party at all this year yet, so I thought that would be fun along with a short movie break in the afternoon. I will ask that you send a drink in for your child. Please no pop. If you can donate $1-2 towards the pizza, I would truly appreciate it.
- I could really use some help in helping your children complete the daily math and reading checklist. Some students are really struggling with this. I'm working on building the habit of using the checklist and having them take the time to reflect on how they are using their time in class. This is definitely a life skill I want to help them strengthen. Please encourage them to use it. I really want to use it as a direct line to you, the parents, on what we are doing in class.
- I also have not forgotten to send the portfolios home. There are items I would like to add for this trimester, and we keep running out of time. Mrs. Filip and I have a checklist we are putting together so that when we do send them home, you know what to look for.
- Still working on getting back into using SeeSaw as a way to have the children submit assignments and share with you what is going on in class. Please know you might not see me comment to every post. I just don't have the time to respond to every single one. I'm hoping you can help me by responding to your child's work.
- I would like to extend the offer to purchase books through Scholastic book order online. Go to this link at Scholastic Book orders. Use the class code H8YC6 - I will continue to extend this due to lack of orders.
- HOMEWORK - Unfinished class work will be labeled to be finished at home and returned the next day. It is also recommended to do a ZEARN lesson at home each night. Otherwise, use your extra time to get exercise, READ, go to bed early, and pursue interests that make you happy!
Week of February 13, 2017
- DAILY 5 (includes reading and word work) - Reading Groups are up and running. Be sure to watch for the Reading/Math checklist at the end of the week. I want you to be able to have the conversation with your child, if needed, about what they are accomplishing in class. If it is not completed, then it becomes homework. Please also ask your child about their reading group book and help them stay on top of the schedule I have given them. For children needing more practice with fluency, I will be assigning twice weekly "One Breath Boxes" using itslearning to help pick up that speed. This will be submitted using SeeSaw.
- WORD WORK/Spelling: MONDAYS you should see a list come home of words for your child to focus on that week. TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY activities will be done in class to help practice their words. On THURSDAY we will have an activity that helps us build our vocabulary. FRIDAY is the spelling test. There are lessons online for each child on itslearning. I recommend to the children that if they do not finish at school during their word work time they should take the activity home for homework. The activities are due by Friday morning and can be turned in early.
- Listen to Reading - The children will be assigned a special song during the week that helps them practice fluency, build vocabulary, and answer comprehension questions that go along with the selection. This can also be completed at home if a child misses a day. There are several different lists due to the range of reading levels. Your child should know which lesson they are to work on. THIS WEEK'S LESSON(s): Frederick Douglass (in honor of African American History Month)
- Guided Reading - Each group will be receiving a book that they are responsible for reading and responding to each week. Watch for a turquoise folder with a baggie to hold the book to come home if your child needs to finish their reading at home. There will be an assignment sheet that will be in the folder letting your child know of what assignments they are responsible for with their book that week. Work on that February calendar and don't forget the activity on the back. It's due at the end of the month.
- WRITING - Twice a week we do a 5 minute timed writing to practice writing fluency. Working on Literary Essays and organization. We are also practicing using our cursive handwriting in our work. As part of our reading, we are looking at informational text features. This will get us ready for our next writing unit.
- MATH - Adjustments are being made to our pace in math. The majority of the class was tested on Module 2 at the end of last week no matter where they were within the unit. We then basically restarted everyone at Module 3 (Multiplication) to allow me to more easily group the students that need help on specific skills. This will also help me keep more of the children on pace in the third grade curriculum. I know it isn't possibly for everyone, but completing a ZEARN lesson at home so they are ready for the next day's lesson is highly recommended. Every day we use a website called www.xtramath.com for daily practice in math fluency skills. This can also be used on the weekend at home. - Thanks to everyone who was able to come help out at our Valentine Party.
- I loved seeing the baby pictures of your children. I could recognized every one. Brings out the "mom" in me feeling honored that I get to spend time with your "babies" every day. They are always your babies, just in bigger bodies!
- I could really use some help in helping your children complete the daily math and reading checklist. Some students are really struggling with this. - I also have not forgotten to send the portfolios home. There are items I would like to add for this trimester, and we keep running out of time. I'm hoping this week will work out so you will have them for the long weekend. I want to keep you updated on the progress your child is making.
- On that subject, by next week I would like to start getting back into using SeeSaw as a way to have the children submit assignments and share with you what is going on in class. Please know you might not see me comment to every post. I just don't have the time to respond to every single one. I'm hoping you can help me by responding to your child's work.

Week of November 14, 2016
- DAILY 5 (includes reading and word work) - Reading Group routines are being practiced.

- SCIENCE - Sound is our topic. We are also working on a vocabulary collection on Book Creator that we can keep adding to throughout the year to help us practice our science vocab.
- SOCIAL STUDIES - The children are continuing with basic geography and map skills; last week we enjoyed some Michigan history learning about the Edmund Fitzgerald.
- TECHNOLOGY - Use ZEARN and Dreambox at home for extra math practice. Please make sure your child's Ipad comes back to school charged. I'm still working on a sheet with all the passwords the children will need.
